Imam Mosque (Shah Mosque) - Isfahan
This mosque which , was built on the south side of Naqsh-e Jahan Square in Safavid dynasty(1500-1700) by Abbas I of Persia was built with the goal of centering political, religious, economic, and cultural activities. In this process Isfahan‘s center was shifted away from the area surrounding the old Jameh Mosque of Isfahan in the north and relocated closer to the Zayandeh Rud river and Naghshe Jahan square.

Imam Mosque (Shah Mosque) - Isfahan
Shabestan is a space like a chamber that can be usually found in traditional places such as a mosque. There are two Shabestans on the eastern and western side of the Myansara of Imam Mosque. The eastern Shabestan is larger than the western one without any ornamentation, but the other one has decorated with seven-colored tiles. Imam Mosque was built between 1611 and 1629 as a part of Naqsh-e Jahan Square complex by decision of Shah Abbas. The task for the leading architect of the project, Shaykh Bahai, was to build a mosque that would symbolize the contribution of clergy in the Empire’s power structure.

Following the Iranian traditional mosque plan, the Shah Mosque has a court (50 by 67 meters) surrounded by a two-story arcade on four sides with four iwans, one at the center of each side, and a domed sanctuary behind the southwest iwan, oriented towards Mecca, according to ArchNet, which is collaborative digital humanities project focused on Islamic architecture and the built environment of Muslim societies more generally.

The interior ceiling is 36.3m high, but the exterior reaches up to 51m due to the double layering used in construction. The hollow space in between is responsible for the loud echoes heard when you stamp your foot on the black paving stones under the centre of the dome.

Imam Mosque (Shah Mosque) - Isfahan
This mosque which , was built on the south side of Naqsh-e Jahan Square in Safavid dynasty(1500-1700) by Abbas I of Persia was built with the goal of centering political, religious, economic, and cultural activities. In this process Isfahan‘s center was shifted away from the area surrounding the old Jameh Mosque of Isfahan in the north and relocated closer to the Zayandeh Rud river and Naghshe Jahan square.

Shabestan is a space like a chamber that can be usually found in traditional places such as a mosque. There are two Shabestans on the eastern and western side of the Myansara of Imam Mosque. The eastern Shabestan is larger than the western one without any ornamentation, but the other one has decorated with seven-colored tiles. Jame Abbasi Mosque (Shah Mosque, Imam Mosque) - Isfahan
Shabestan is a space like a chamber that can be usually found in traditional places such as a mosque. There are two Shabestans on the eastern and western side of the Myansara of Imam Mosque. The eastern Shabestan is larger than the western one without any ornamentation, but the other one has decorated with seven-colored tiles. Also, the western Shabestan has a fabulous Mihrab which has made of marble. Mihrab is a semicircular niche in the wall of a mosque. | Copyright: Mostafa Meraji
