Spain Honors Iranian Poet Khayyam

Omar Khayyam Statue Installed in Complutense University in Madrid
Tehran, May 21, 2011: In a commemorating ceremony, a statue of the internationally celebrated Iranian poet, Omar Khayam, has been unveiled in Complutense University in Madrid.

Tehran, May 21, 2011: In a commemorating ceremony, a statue of the internationally celebrated Iranian poet, Omar Khayam, has been unveiled in Complutense University in Madrid.

To honor the Iranian poet, philosopher, scientist, Hakim Omar Khayam, on the occasion of his birthday anniversary, a commemorating ceremony was held in the University on Wednesday, May 18, ISNA reported.

Morteza Saffari, the Islamic Republic of Iran+s ambassador to Spain, Mohammad Baqer Khorramshad , the head of the Culture and Islamic Communications Organization, a large number of professors and students of Persian language and literature alongside a number of Iranian residents in Spain attended the ceremony.

Saffari, by referring to the allocation of an international day to Khayyam by UNESCO, stressed the need for appreciating Khayyam and noted “Khayyam must be honored for his contributions to the mankind."

He added that such moves would lead to the further introduction of Iran to other nations and broadening of cultural cooperation.

“Khayyam was not only a poet, he was also a great astronomer, philosopher, and mathematician and contributed to a calendar reform whose design, with its amazing accuracy, is still used after the passage of [about] one thousand years.” said Khorramshad.

A number of articles, on the theme of Khayyam and his works, were presented in the ceremony in Spanish.

The ceremony also hosted an exhibition of some books about khayyam and his quatrains (Rubaiyat), as well

In Persian speaking countries, Khayyam has had an impact on literature and societies through the translation of his works and popularization by other scholars.

Among English-speaking countries Scholars; Edward FitzGerald (1809-83), who was the most influential, introduced Khayyam to the West through translation of his quatrains.
