London-based Rossi & Rossi to open new art space in Hong Kong

Erbossyn Meldibekov, Mutation, 2009. Bronze. Various sizes 30 x 30 x 15 cm (12 x 12 x 6 in) - 35 x 30 x 35 cm (13 ¾ x 12 x 13 ¾ in)
HONG KONG.- Jean Marc Decrop, the noted expert in the contemporary art of China, Asia and Middle East at the French national chamber CNES, and Fabio Rossi, of London-based Rossi & Rossi - one of the world’s leading dealers in classical Himalayan and contemporary Asian art - are delighted to announce the opening of Yallay Space. Housed in an industrial building in Wong Chuk Hang, Hong Kong, Yallay Space extends to some 600 sq metres and will specialize in Art from the Middle East and Asia.

‘I have been dealing in Asian art for over 25 years and have known Hong Kong for almost as long’, says Fabio Rossi. ‘It has a vitality and energy which is extremely positive, exciting me enough to make me move here back in August 2011. I am delighted to be starting this new art venture with Jean-Marc who has tremendous knowledge of contemporary Middle Eastern and Asian art, and invaluable contacts with artists and institutions. The space gives us the perfect opportunity to develop ambitious contemporary projects while at the same time continuing to showcase masterpieces of classical Himalayan art.’ Based in Hong Kong since 1993 Jean Marc Decrop has been involved from 1997 with the first generation of Chinese contemporary artists (1985-2005), he says, ‘When Chinese contemporary art exploded in 2005, I turned to Indonesia, for me the second most interesting art scene in Asia, and later to the Middle East, where new talents are today developing new paradigms. There, I have been advising the Beirut Art Fair and became associate-partner with Isabelle van den Eynde gallery in Dubai. Recently, I have become fascinated by a new generation of artists that is again blooming in China and I strongly believe in their developing talent. Yallay Space will showcase the art and artists of these regions, away from the dominating North Atlantic sphere and Hong Kong, the new hub of the art world, seems to me the perfect place to become. I am thrilled to work with Fabio who has been showing emerging artists from areas away from the beaten track - for the last 5 years.’ Both Fabio and Jean Marc believe in the renaissance of ancient links between Asia and the Middle East, something that could be called a Contemporary Silk Road for the 21st century and that Yallay Space will showcase the creative talents that are emerging from the area. Yallay reflects this combined heritage being an amalgam of Yally Industrial Building, where the gallery is located, and the Arabic expression ‘Yallah!’ (Let's go!). It will be amongst the first in Asia to exhibit contemporary Arab, iranian and Turkish artists, while at the same time being a platform equally for artists from other Asian regions, including Tibet, South-east Asia and Central Asia.
